Mac upgrade to OSX now the apps won't run

Question Mac upgrade to OSX now the apps won't run

After a recent upgrade to a new Mac, we transferred the data & programmes using Firewire & the install wizard. Now however, we're getting problems running much in OSX mode as everything only seems to want to run in Classic OS9 mode. Please can anyone confirm if we'll need to upgrade everything, or if we've just done something wrong?

Previous Mac OS 9.2, new Mac OSX 10.3.7

Adobe Illustrator 9.0
Adobe Photoshop 6.0
Quark Express 5.0 (the new Mac really doesn't seem to like this version)

First thing you want to do is upgrade to 10.3.9. Once you've done that, try running Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities) and use the 'repair permissions' option on the boot drive. Reboot and then see if you can launch applications.

Thanks, we don't have an Internet connection yet for the Mac, can we try the Disk Utility anyway?

Are your packages OSX native? Although on older machines you could run Classic (OS9), this could be your problem..........

Sounds to me like the reason they are running in Classic mode is they are Classic apps. Did you upgrade the apps themselves too or just the OS itself?

OS9 and OSX are 2 completely different animals and Classic programmes will only open in OSX if they are in the Classic window.

Adobe (and others) used to let you swap license from 9-X for situations like yours. Not sure whether they still do though?

The applications were transferred from the Old Mac to the new one using the Mac transfer wizard. It just did it automatically. The old apps will run in Classic mode, but the printer will not. So we can do work, but not print. However Quark is behaving badly even in Classic mode. I suppose we need to upgrade all the apps to the latest version?

Yes you can still try the disk utility option.

Select an application and use the "Get info" command. What does it say for "Kind" if It says "Classic Application" then it is an application that will *only* run in classic. If it says "Application" then it will run nativley under OS X.

As others have said, and after using my brain and re-reading your original post, It does sound as though all your apps are Classic apps, and that'll explain what you are seeing.

XPress is known for being an absolute pig when running under Classic, and the only real solution is to upgrade to an OS X compatible version.

As for printing, yes, alas, printing in Classic is a little flawed to say the least. What you might want to do is search/post on www.macfixitforums.com and www.macosxhints.com and see if there are any solutions for your printer. Some clever people have come up with workarounds for the printing issues.

What you could do is save the file as PDF then drop it onto the OS X printer, providing OS X sees your printer, and then in theory it should print.
