I'm thinking of getting of Tom Tom setup but don't really know what to look for . I know that I need a suitable pda and the tom tom stuff but there seems to be loads of options .
Any tips or recommendations as to what to go for . I want to use it in and out of the car in the UK and europe and probably the USA at sometime in the future .

You can always get the all- in-one Tom Tom Navigator box. which is easy to transport and use in different cars. If you go the pda route, you are getting into Bluetooth, 12 volt cabling for both devices (pda & Tom Tom), memory cards to store the maps on etc.

Tom Tom navigator seems good but I don't think you can use it out of the car . Been looking around and there seem's to be some good bundle deals around , especially with recon pda's .

I have an iPaq 2210 with Tomtom Navigator, car kit and one of these:

Maps etc. are on an SD card. Can use it on foot and in the car. Works for me as the flexibility of having a PDA as well as Satnav unit nearly justifies the expense

Does it work in the car using the SysOnChip reciever or do you use the reciever that comes with the car kit ?

I thought this looked a good deal with a £30 blue tooth reciever clicky
but the SysOnChip with a windscreen mount looks like it might be a good all in one solution

I use the SysOnChip only now..... works in and out of the car and picks up more sats than my Tomtom wired receiver without the spaghetti . Runs from the iPaq battery so only one device to charge which is taken care of with the car kit.

I have used it to find the car when I have parked in an unfamiliar place and even on a taxi ride once....cabby was a bit cold when told to turn left in 200 yards mind, but kept his mind on the job and my fare down

i have a sysonchipcf 512mb/gps with external arial, brand new un-used for sale if interested.

 

have a look at the Mitac Mio168. its a PDA with a built in GPs receiver, so only one power lead needed, and no seperate aerial lead (but u can plug one in if necessary)

I think I'm going to go with this lot , not the easiest way to do it , but flexible and should be good for other things ( email , bluetooth etc ) cheaper than the bundles too .

Got the same, but with a dual mount to allow for the mobile phone

Had it all for about a year - an excellent set of kit (would be lost without it!)

If you aren't in a desperate hurry, hang on for a couple of weeks or so for the launch of TT Navigator 5. It will have up to date maps with street names and full 7 digit postcode search amongst other improvements.

 

Pahhhh... meaning us old owners will have to part with yet MORE money!

 

Oh, and for those interested, downloaded a fab CAB file today that allows you to use MP3's and WMA files as ringtones If anyone wants it just PM me and I will mail it over. Or, I could host it for download if you like?

Says you get a free upgrade from navigator 3 if you've bought after 1st of march , but I might wait and save the hassel

I know, but it's a never ending fee because it's always being updated. I started with 2 then purchased the upgrade for 3 and now will have to upgrade to 5 *shrug*. Still, it's necessary all the same.

Bumping this.. rather then starting a new one.. Im very interested in getting the whole pda / tomtom thing going.. and the 2110 looks good and very popular.. But is there any reason people are not choosing the 4700 or other wifi enabled ones? Other then the price of course.

I mean if im gonna go pda route for tomtom.. i would like to have the best pda i can get. (as i would be using those features alot too) Just wondering if there is some hidden pitfalls im missing, in getting the more powerfull unit... Also has anyone tried the one with built in gps and mobile fone?
