Question OK - I'm confused. Website issue

I've used Dreamweaver to construct my website - really happy with the results.

The only problem I've got is that I've uploaded my pages, however when I view it, the font, size and background has vanished

What am I doing wrong?

Dan

more info needed!

whats the url, what exactly have you uploaded, does the site use css, or are the style elements embeded in the html pages? Have you declared a strict dtd type in the header?

give us something to work with...

Have you set the styles/bg properties in an external stylesheet which you've forgotten to upload? If you run Firefox or Mozilla, get the Web Developer Extension which should help you deduce what is being loaded and what isn't.

ok - running firefox now (suprised at how much nicer it is than IE!!)

the url =

www.daproductions.co.uk

I *think* I know what's happened - my background etc - the image seems to be linked to a local machine file as opposed to one that's been uploaded.

You'll have to forgive my ignorance, as I've only really used Word before, which embedds the additional files in the page - my guess is that Dreamweaver doesn't do that!

Does that sound plausible?

You need a table on that page

Yes, that does make sense... when you use dreamweaver, the Bg Image location should be the same as on your webspace. It doesn't have to have the http bit in fron providing your FTP file list is mirrored on your PC.

So, for example, my website in dreamweaver shows one of my background images as images/pinkgingham.jpg - on my ftp list it is in the same folder 'images'. Get it? If you use http://www.yoursitename.com/images/pinkgingham.jpg then you would not get to view the picture in Dreamweaver - you would only get a grey box.

So, first important thing is to make your FTP file list exactly the same as your PC file list.... or vice versa. They should be exact copies so you know where you are

Yeah, loads.. but the most important thing is playtime - you need loads of it Most blokes hate my site coz it's so girly and I suspect any decent webdesigner would poke more holes in it than a prostitutes fair share, but for me it works. A few issues with the coding as far as loading is concerned but I can live with that

Oh, tips, Play play and more play - get to know it like your own private parts (dreamweaver I mean).

And as said above, keep your FTP file list exactly the same as your PC file list

Yes, kinda.. it's actually the whole pink page thing as a background rather than just the logo That's how I got the gradient. And yes, it is an extension of me to a tee Im sure there is a user here called dreamweaver or something weaver who has professional experience of dreamweaver. He can usually be found in this forum and Im sure he will poke his head in soon. Although for simple pages such indepth knowledge is not necessary I don't believe.

Your assumption about the file paths being relative to your machine are correct as you can see in the above image. What you need to do is upload these images seperatley to your site and change the image paths from:

<img width=15 height=15
src="file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/Dan/Desktop/DAProd/blob.gif" alt="*">

TO

<img width=15 height=15
src="/blob.gif" alt="*">

Also, I know you have a Mac so this might help, that window you see above shows everything that a site is loading in, so if something isn't working you can find out why. Its in Safari and you can get that window using Window > Activity

Your page code should look like....

Code:

Although, as Soulgirl mentions, you really need a table in there. Or CSS if you want to do things proper like.

Try: http://www.htmlhelp.com/reference/cs...-tutorial.html for a quick helper. Good luck.

Oh how I would love to learn CSS - that zen garden thang was just awsome. I don't have the time to devote to it though I am putting a simple page together for him with a table I am NOT an expert but I think it will look a little more professional than what he had before as he is selling something

I quickly did this last night: http://www.thesoulgirl.com/danscoobynet/index.htm but still have to pop in a nice simple dhtml menu and content

Don't be rude to me now

Looks like a good start!

I'd definitely get into CSS if you can, at first its a bit complex but it will all of a sudden just click. I barely remember how to do tables these days

Ah CSS, < shivers > I've been learning it as I need to use it to create widgets for Mac OS X 10.4, very very powerful, but a little confusing at first. DW is pretty good at showing what is going on though.

I would strongly recommend using the DW tutorials, they are very good

That is exactly what I do for tables these days, I honestly can't remember since learning CSS, (one in one out brain again )

Yep, DW is good for learning, especially if you have the view source + code enabled.

Just make sure you remove all the DW / MM tags and references in the code as you go so source snobs like my colleagues can't tell what you did it in .

LOL - I will bear that tag stipping in mind *snigger* - It fascinates me tremendously you know... wouldn't mind going on a college course but I bet most of them are for complete noobs, and although I'm not brilliant, I am beyond that of a novice.

my my !!!

Look at all this chat while I'm working!!!!

Whilst I have a *limited* understanding of the interweb, I'm really more proficient at a different type of programming.

Still I'm getting there slowly

I'm really intrested to see how Karen's putting the page together - I learn more efficiently after imitation, as opposed to reading

Woo Hoo!!!

That Mac stuff looks great, albeit a tad over my head

I thought it would be good to have a separate page listing your customer portfolio that would include the logos of the customers you have serviced already. You might need to check that they are cool with you using their logo though But I will chuck that page together anyway - the images could always be removed if necessary and replaced by good old plain text LOL. The logos could link off to their sites which gives a little more interest to the surfers experience I guess
