Question Network routers / hubs / switches ?

At home, I've got a cable broadband connection and a D Link router. The router has an input and 4 output connections.

Can I connect a switch like this one to one of the outputs of the router to allow more PC's to be connected to the network ?

Or could I use a hub like this ?

dont buy 3com (from experience) but yes any 10/100 switch will do

You should be able to connect almost any hub to it (and certainly one of the ones you listed).

A switch is more 'intelligent' and work faster. Go for one of those (Netgear are good, Belkin are also ok and a bit cheaper)

On a hub The bandwidth is shared by all and every packet is seen on every port

On a switch each port has dedicated bandwidth and only packets that need to are sent out each port.

Important difference when designing large building infrastructures - less so at home. But switches are sooo cheap now there should be zero need for any hubs. In fact many people are losing the difference and referring to switches as "hubs" simply because they are the hub of their network.
