Question PC not powering up - any suggestions?

un-named PC (P4 2Ghz) using a Intel 845e mobo (no other details - I didn't build the PC)

Won't even power up - green power LED on the Mobo, but no activity (fans) from PSU or drives.

Changed the PSU - no joy.

Any ideas - I think it's a fubar'd mobo.......

Did it ever work, or have you just built it? Did you add or change any hardware recently?

If it was a working system, you didn't change anything, and the new PSU isn't working, I'd probably agree with you. But one thing to try: unplug, then press the power button. Remove the side of the case so you can watch the CPU fan. Plug in and switch on. Does the fan spin for a second? After this it certainly won't move, but there is a reason to go through the unplug malarky.

For non-boots, the first option is the PSU, which you've already changed. Next option is RAM swop-out, then swop-out the graphics card. If all that fails & you're sure that you haven't swopped out a crappy PSU for another crappy PSU... then the motherboard is gone.

even with no memory a PC will still power up. By power up I mean the cpu fan will spin. Drives will spin up.

Is the switch OK? Is it correctly connected to the jumper on the motherboard? Also check the reset switch isn't jammed in. This can cause the PC not to power up.

To check the switch remove the switch connector from the motherboard and using something metal short the 2 pins. Obviously be careful not to short anything else!

Nice one peeps.

not my build - been asked to clean up somebody else's mess!!

Tried a brand new PSU - still no joy.

Need to look at the jumpers for the mobo - if I could find what it's called.

Last time I had this problem, the mobo was fcuked.

yep - made sure that the mobo had both power connectors sorted.

Yes, the mobo is seated on the risers - the PC wasn't built by me, but a professional company out in Canada (long story).

and YES, I did make sure that the owners had changed the voltage over!!

No one's mentioned the CPU. You tried it in another board?

I had thought of that one Buzz, but regrettably, I've not got a board to try it on

Where are you? If it's anywhere nears Cambs then I have a 1.6A in an 845 board, both available for tests.

When I fried my CPU it also exhibited the exact symptoms you describe. Once you have done what Nick suggested, you'll be left with either the CPU or Mobo being poo.

Best bet at that stage is find someone with a compatible PC to either try your CPU in their machine, or their CPU in yours to work out which of CPU / Mobo needs replacing.

Mine turned out to be a loose graphics card and after another few minor problems ive got her up and running

My suggestion is to take the computer back to the basics, ie board and chip, boot up on that then add the graphics card.
Do you also get any chirps (beeps) when you turn the pc on?

Oh another thing to check - make sure that the CPU chip is correctly seated. Take the chip out make sure no pins are bust & reinstall it.

no chirps etc - no power to turn the fans etc. HOWEVER, the mobo led is on.

CPU been checked

Thought about the fuse, but (a) mobo LED is lighting up & (b) tried a new PSU...

Have you tried taking out all expansion cards (modem, sound etc), and then try booting. I had a weird case a while ago where a dodgy modem was bringing down the system not alowing it to power up ??? Took out the modem and then it all worked. Worth while trying it without all expansion cards except video.

if its graphics card, memory or cpu fault, youll get a beep code, which you dont - its not getting that far. I reckon its as per Big Col (post 5), pull all the switch cables off and connect the relavent 2 pins quickly...

Failing that the mobo is knackered....

If the fan never so much as twitches, then it's one of two things: PSU or motherboard. Since the PSU has been swapped out, that makes it the motherboard. IIRC a duff CPU will result in the fan spinning, but little else.
