Question XP/IE freezes

XP SP2 and IE6, all updates etc. P4 with what was good spec a year or two ago.

Recently, after boot up, clicking to open IE it sometimes doesn't open and just shows the busy icon, which later goes away. PC is then unresponsive to Ctrl-Alt-Del, menus pop up but clicking things has no action. Then have to reset and try again, sometimes works, sometimes doesn't.

I don't see any suspicious looking tasks. I've got the latest AVG, Ad-aware, Zonealarm, tried McAfee Stinger as well, startup inspector, cleared the internet cache, tried windows system file integrity checked all to no avail. Tried turning AVG and/or Zonealarm off, no difference.

Can't find anything on search.

Any suggestions?

Sorry no suggestions, but mines just started doing something similar. If I right click on the desktop or inside an windows explorer window, xp hangs (well actually explorer crashes but it amounts to the same thing).

Not been able to find any info on the problem from elsewhere, so I'm beginning to think a re-install may be in order.....

Does it hang when disconnect from any network, either your broadband or home network?

You could try stopping some of the services running in the systray. if you're stopping ZoneAlarm, start the built in Xp firewall if you leave it connected to the net.

try running "Hijack this" to check for more dodgy code as I've found sometimes even Ad-aware and Spybot miss some things.

Thanks Stefan, ran Hijack this just now and nothing suspicious really. I actually switched to Zonealarm because it was doing it on Windows Firewall, made no difference.

Doesn't hang in relation to network connections. It is opening explorer. I'll try spybot as well

Which one in that thread though? I've changed OptIn to AlwaysOff and will see how it goes. But mine is not a right click problem. Spybot found a load of stuff. We'll see.
