Question Any Napster users on board?

I realise I'm in a minority paying for music downloads but there you go.

When you enter your credit card details, the country location defaults to the US and you can't change it which means you can't pay. Maybe I should continue to pirate...

Any ideas?

Cheers

Perhaps you have the US version. Did you download from .co.uk or .com?

Question

Cheers Jason

Do downloads from i-Tunes only come in mp4 format? I'm looking for an mp3 service because I play my music on my mobile and Palm Tungsten.

Thanks mate.

Napster's .mp3 all right - I just can't buy the bloody things. As for the iPod; lovely piece of kit but I really can't justify another gadget

Unhappy

If you go to www.napster.co.uk and download the program, run the executable, pick a song and pick your track, everything is hunky-dory. It all goes smelly when you try to buy your selected track. The payment page where you input your credit card details defaults to a US set-up. In short (I guess) that means your billing information is null and void. That's what the error message says anyway.

Wink

Just had a mail back from the guys in sales prevention and it seems as easy as an uninstall, and reload the .exe from .co.uk.

Napster downloads are DRM protected Windows Media files, not MP3s. I'm not aware of a player for the Palm. You will need a compatible portable device capable of playing these files. See http://www.napster.co.uk/compatible_devices/

Alternatively, you can use Hymn to strip the FairPlay DRM from Apple's .m4p format, thus giving you a plain AAC file (although it will still contain your iTunes username, so don't go sharing your decrypted files!)

Question

Thanks for that - good info. Is it possible to convert this DRM protected .wmf into a .mp3 with db Poweramp or the like?

As Class A has said, you can convert encoded iTunes tracks to MP3's using Hymn (www.hymn-project.org)

This keeps the purchase info, so you can prove you bought it if need be, but strips out the restrictions.

The long winded way is to burn it to a CD, then reimport it. But that is a bit of an ****, although Apple do say you can do it on their support pages.

Wouldn't know whether this one will work for Napster though.

I wouldn't build your hopes up on all this DRM stripping lasting too long anyway, the next evolution of the wma (Windows Media) codec will implant an inaudible sound signature in the track which will make it impossible to strip any sort of DRM using any methods.

As AN says [must try and remember your name Angry; we always seem to pop up in the same threads!], you can probably burn it and then re-rip it but you will suffer "generational loss" as WMA, AAC and MP3 are lossy codecs. At least tools like Hymn just alter the file rather than re-encoding, but I don't know of a comparable tool for WMA files

Good code, thanks. Back to i-Tunes then. All I want is legally procured MP3s that I can play on a variety of devices - phone, Tungsten T3 and a Sony NW5.

Just had a look at Hymn's website. Any recommendations on which version to use?

You're not a million miles out with An anyway m8, it's Andy

I can't find anything that does wma, although I guess there will be apps out there that will let you strip the DRM from wma, its just what else these programmes would do that would worry me.

Les I think you will want the below version...
