Default Daft question re firewalls on networks

I've got two PC's on a home network. The first one has broadband access and the second links to the internet via the network and then though the first.

I run a decent firewall and virus checker on the first one. Will the firewall in the first one also protect the second one since all links are through the first one. Likewise the virus checker, will the virus checker on the first also protect the second?

You certainly need the virus checker on both, and probably the firewall as well. Since there are good free firewalls about, there's no reason not to. But be aware that ZoneAlarm at least isn't keen on networks in the freeware version: you may need to downgrade the security setting for the "trusted zone" to low.
