Question Odd Broadband activity

Hi

Am with plusnet and when the broadband is working/available the computer 'pings' and when it is not it pings again.Don't know if this is the same with other ISP's.However my question is that it seems to ping in and out a lot , especially late afternoon/early evening. It will ping once so you start to connect and then about 3/4 seconds later it drops out again. It then repeats this for hours sometimes.
I want to know if the fault is likely to be with BT or plusnet so i can tackle them.

Cheers

PeteS

Have you been running an extended ping? ping <ip address> -t?

What BlkKnight is refering to traceroute. Its tracks your route from your PC all the way to the destination you spefify.

Go to Start|Run|and type Command (for windows 98) or cmd for 2000 or above.

then type tracert followed by the IP address

Something like this > tracert 195.166.128.123

Also i think i might of confused people with talk of 'pings'.By 'ping' i mean a noise the computer makes not the ping to do with response times between computer and server.Sorry

Copy & paste results.

If it fails retry a couple of times. This is the IP of my external server:
62.121.16.129

It should be fairly quick. Try that IP and the one you are trying to reach and post results.

so when it makes this noise, does it correspond to the ADSL connection being dropped and then auto re-connecting?

You actually get an aduable (sp) noise? when you are dialing out?

It could be your filters are knackered

It's a PCI modem. Also i do remember when i set it up originally the plusnet suggested protocols didn't work but one of the others did! When i queeried this with plusnet they said that BT had it wrong at the exchange and would change it one day and i would have to change it my end as well. That day has not arrived and i've been on broadband for about a year now.

To answer an earlier question yes the 'ping' noise corresponds to the adsl connecting/disconnecting.

Thanks for the replies so far

PeteS

PS The protocol is PPP over ATM VCMUX(RFC2364) if it helps.

Ok, then you really need to fix the constant connect/disconnect, as it should stay up for days/weeks/months.

I suggest you log a fault call with plusnet.

regards

thats the exact problem i had with the exchange. however my dad knows people in BT and had them switch the protocol which fixed it. the pci modem i dont think is the problem as that was to do (on my pc) with the whole computer freezing when the connection was idle. Definately the protocol. Trying to get BT to change it? BEST OF LUCK!!!!!!

from time to time try re-installing the modem with different protocols
