Default Took the plunge

Well, I've been console-less (or should that be unconsoleable? ) for over a year now, so thought it was time to get back into things, so got myself an xbox at the weekend. OK, I do want GT4 and so a PS2 is required, but really it's the only thing I'd play on the PS2, so I did not really see the benefit of getting a PS2 just for one game, plus, xbox live just seems way better than sony's offering.

So, I have my advanced av adapter, so I now enjoy dolby digital gaming, and lovely it is.

Console came with Shenmue II (sp?) and some Tennis game, not played either, but one assumes they are not that good, any comments?

I purchased the GTA double pack (GTA3 and Vice City) and PGR2. Must say I'm impressed with both of them (had GTA3 on PS2, never had VC though, love it to bits)

So, what other 'must have' games are there, apart from Halo, have played it to death (pardon the pun) whilst in the US, and just don't like it. Other FPS I do like, so was thinking maybe medal of honour might be good?

Bit of death and carnage does appeal to me, as does racing.

So, advice and comments on good games.

I will at some point be getting xbox live too, so online gaming would be good, think my **** will be reamed online at PGR2 though, saying that, I'm a bit tasty in the Porsche Cayanne (pissed myself first time round, first corner looked like the school run from hell )

I'd highly recommend these as a nice cross section . . . .

Ninja Gaiden - Awesome . . . but hard
SSX3 - Snowboarding
RalliSport Challenge 2 - er . . . Rally
Tao Feng: Fist of the Lotus - Beat Em Up
Mashed - Multiplayer, lager fuelled laughs
Dead to Rights - Action shooter
Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay - FPS
TOCA Race Driver 2 - Driving
I-Ninja - Extreme platforming amusement

There's so many

Oh, and a chip

Have been pondering modding the thing already!

Question on modding, what benefits are there in doing so? bear in mind I won't be using it for DVD movies (have a dvd player for that)

Lots, but the big benefit is Media Centre IMO.

You can stream media (pics, movies or music) from your PC to the XBox and playback in Xbox Media Centre. It can handle pretty much any format you throw at it.

Download saved games from the net and put them on your box.
Surf the net on it, using linksboks. Use legacy console emulators.
Backup games on your HDD, so you don't have to carry all those discs around

Basically pretty much anything you can do on a PC/Linux box, but from the comfort of your living room If your PC is in your living room then you may not feel the need for it, but for me its a neat & all-in-one media solution.

Oh, and of course you can play backups and imports, but thats just a minor aside

I'd go with DJ's list, but scrap Tao Feng and put Soul Calibur 2 in there instead

DJ - thanks. Would be great if I had a PC/Mac (yes, being pedantic ) at home, but I don't.

The saved game thing and net surfing does appeal somewhat, I've seen it on TechTV and it looks pretty good, the MAME type stuff would be class too.

hope you've already played Shenmue 1 ? Seems a shame to begin at Shenmue II

Great games - pleased it arrived on XBox as us Dreamcast owners shouldn't have been the only ones to see it.

nope, not played it and don't think I'll play part 2. They are still wrapped in original wrapping, so think I might take them to EB or something and exchange them for something else, perhaps THUG.

Rainbox Six 3 - excellent for Xbox Live Get yourself up to speed with it just in time for RS3: Black Arrow coming out next month (£16.99 from play.com). Apparently the first game to take advantage of the new Xbox Live features.

Markus - If you don't have a PC/Linux box at home, then with a chip and an Xbox you soon will have

I've got a PS2 dancemat that I use with a joypad converter on my xbox, great fun There's about 5 or 6 good dancing games out for the XBox now too.
