HELP! Popups driving me nuts!
I need help please
Since going broadband i have been plagued with popups
I have Norton Antivirus and internet security with ad blocking. Since upgrading to braodband i have also downloaded Ad Aware 6.0.
I've ran ad aware everynight whilst on the net and within a week it has deleted / quarentined (sp) over 300 logs. I've also pasted the ads into the norton trash can. Norton say it remembers the addy and blocks it in future (well thats sh1te)
Can someone please direct me to a programme i can install to get rid of all this sh1te.
TIA
Pete

I presume you are using XP, I also presume they are grey pop-ups with "Messenger Service" or similar at the top?
No program required, although some will try to charge you £30.00 for what you're about to get for free
Start > Run > Type
Services.msc
and hit enter
Scroll down to the entry titled Messenger. Double click it and then click the stop button. Then change the startup type to Disabled. OK/Apply and these messages will stop.

Assuming you're not talking about Messenger Service (if you are then, as Fig says ^^^), then you have 2 realistic options;
- Drop IE like a red hot brick and go for something else. A mate of mine uses FireFox and totally raves about it.
- MS have released a 2nd release candidate for XP Service Pack 2. They have done a lot of work to IE to stop just this sort of thing. We've installed it on a couple of machines in the office and it stopped just about every popup except a JavaSript floating ad that appeared within the window you were using. It also has code to prevent 'add ins' adding themselves in, and home page hijacking.

I've started to using firefox, and it seems pretty impressive. (I've just got a couple of very minor gripes, but that's just me being picky!)
Try something like HijackThis to see if you've got something sneaky altering your web settings or redirecting page requests.
John.

Thats great chaps thanks
Yes i have got XP Pro and yes i do get both of these types of adds
I shall do as Fig says for "messenger" ones. I only get two types of those but its around 1 per minute 1 is for a free college diploma of my choice and the other is Spyware
Zhastaph, i like the sound of the service pack. Can i be a pain in @rse and ask if you've got a link where i can download it or if it costs £'s do you know how much ?
Thanks again, you've all been really helpful

Note that it's a Release Candidate, so it may cause problems. Use at your own risk.

Dominic, thanks for that mate. Just got home and downloaded it
Fig, i've changed those settings, thanks.
I've been on here now for nearly half an hour and NOTHING
Thanks to everyone, great response, cheers
One of the reasons i HAD to do something was that my daughter came online the other night and a big popup came on showing a rather well endowed young lady with her thripenny bits hanging out and her huge beaver in full view (it was air brushed out ). This was for a mobile phone screen saver, WTF Disconcerting to say the least
Thanks again everyone, big help
