Assuming that your motherboard is USB2-capable, then any USB2 devices connecting to it should work at the faster rate (yes, the device would take care of that). USB1/USB1.1 devices will transfer at their lower rates. If your motherboard is only USB1.1 capable then you will gain nothing by attaching a USB2 device. Does this answer your question?

Yeah you need a USB 2.0 compatible mobo. Right Click on MY COMPUTER & select PROPERTIES. Select DEVICE MANAGER & open the UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS CONTROLLERS tab. You need to see USB 2.0 ROOT HUB DEVICE.

If you haven't got this you could always add a USB 2.0 PCI controller card with are pretty cheap even for a legendary tight old git like you

Yeah you are looking in the right place so if there is no mention of USB 2.0 then you need a seperate card like this one

No problemo. That card gives you firewire connectivity as well which can be useful

I got a USB2/Firewire PCI card from Ebuyer for about 15 quid for my old PC. Works a treat with my iPod and Mini DV camcorder now.
