Pioneer 107 is 46+vat from e-buyer

LG is better as I previously has a Pioneer 106, have had it a while now, it does 12 speed DVD+R and 8 speed everything else.

It also does DVD RAMs.

In my opinion the Pioneer's are definately the burners to have.
Without any doubt, the least fussy drive on the market. They'd burn a pork pie if you could get it in the drive!

NEC warns against Double-layer updates
Thursday, 27 May 2004

NEC is issuing a warning against firmware updates for the 8x DVD burner ND-2500A being offered in diverse online forums. These updates are supposed to render the burner capable of writing double-layer blanks (DVD+R DL)...
* Questions and Answers

Is it possible for the ND-2500A to also burn double-layer media after an update?

Such an update is in principle possible and can, in some cases, lead to the desired effect as the drives are constructed nearly identically. NEC is issuing an express warning, however, against performing an update with non-approved firmware.

Why is NEC issuing an express warning against performing updates with nonapproved firmware?

There is a risk that errors may occur during the installation of unofficial firmware and that the product may be damaged. NEC would like to call attention to the fact that all of the customer’s warranty claims become null and void in such a situation.

Why is NEC not offering an official firmware update for the ND-2500A?

In the case of a DVD+R DL, for instance, the laser optics must be precisely adjusted. This adjustment must take place during production, however, and cannot be performed subsequently. It is therefore not easily possible to enable the ND-2500A to write a DVD+R DL after production. There is no guarantee that an updated drive will burn DVDs reliably after the update.

So yes you can upgrade but not officially as it may cause corruption to further SL disk burning in the future. Hope thats helpful for ya!

There is none available as yet for the UK market.
There should be official UK products available late July/early August but expect to pay £5-6 per disk.
Ritek aim to manufacture a dual-layer disk for the European market at an anticipated £1.50 per disk! That's very reasonable in my opinion as good 4x media cost practically that just before Xmas.

I'm trying to get some DL media shipped across from the US just now but sourcing it at under $12 a pop is proving tricky.

The only DL burners I've seen so far are for "+" format. Will there be DL for "-" any time soon? If I was going to buy one, I'd rather wait for DL "-"....
