Default Minimum Spec Laptop for Wireless LAN conncetion

I'm interested in getting a laptop and connecting it wirelessly, to be able to wander the house and the garden etc etc....

All I want to be able to do is surf and email..........I would like to connect a webcam (so the unlucky few can see me in the garden!!)

What is the minimum spec that would do this??

Is there any consideration needed as to whether the Laptop should accept a specfic wireless adapter card etc??

I want to pay as little as poss...... (2nd hand will do fine)

Would really appreciate some help here!!!!!!!!

I'll need to get wireless router aswell.....

Summer's here!!!

The biggest issue I found in the garden was more to do with screen brightness. On a sunny day, and sitting in the sun, the contrast of many laptop screens is not high enough for you to see the screen well.

If surfing at midday, you'll find yourself sitting in the deepest shade just so you can see the screen.

For your other query, you'll find the latest laptops have wireless built in, but an older one is fine so long as it has a PCMCIA card slot (which anything from the last 2-3 years will have).

Wireless LAN requires hardly any processor time really....it's all done on the wireless card. So, you don't need any huge spec for what you want to do.

Any of the NEW laptops for around £500-600 will do, so you should be able to get a 2nd hand one that is capable for less than that.

I have a Dell CPI (400mhz Pentium 2, 128 ram) and a belkin wireless card (11mbps) why bother with a 54g card when you are just surfing the net. That laptop will run XP fine and is brilliant for working in the back garden.

I would just make sure you get a spec that can run Windows XP, because it is so easy to set up a wireless connection with it.
