Smile 3com Switches

Hi,

Any one know if you can join 2 3com baseline autosensing swithes together via a statndard CAT5 cable. I have one installed on one floor but need to move our servers to the lower floor where I only have a couple of CAT5 ports availble. What I want to do is leave the existing where it is (within the patch panel cabinet) and install a new one downstairs where the servers are and then join the 2 via structured cabling (CAT5). May sound like a lame question to some but I dont know and I dont want to purchase a new one if this wont work.

Thanks to any one who can help

Crewy

Usually they have an 'uplink' port on them for this very situatuion.

Have a look on the 3com site for more info

Also make sure that you do not exceed the Cat 5/5e 100m length rule for the cabling link otherwise you will have problems.

Some 3com switches have a button to enable hardware crossover for uplinking so you can just use a standard patch cable. Otherwise just use an inline coupler and a crossover cable.

Also if you need more uplink bandwidth, try and configure multilink trunking if the switch supports it. Means running more cables though.
