Question Laptop over heating

Got Tosh Tecra 8100, running 2k. Seems that the cooling fan is not always kicking in when it should. Didn't have this problem when the machine was running W98. The fan does work, if running excel with autosave on, when autosave prompts to save the cpu utilisation hits 100% and than the fan starts running. The problem is that the OS is not automactically starting the fan when needed?

Any ideas or software diag's or s/w to run the fan?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Buck

Have a look on the toshiba web site for any software / hardware diags, probaly wont be much use, have a simlair problem with my compaq laptop, diags say its fine, I say its overheating !
Not sure if XP has somethng in system properties / virtual memory that like 98 can set the role of the machine - ie laptop.

I'll have another look at tosh's site.

It's not just over heating, its freezing once it has reached a certain temp.

The fan does work, if running excel with autosave on, when autosave prompts to save the cpu utilisation hits 100%
If the CPU usage is hitting 100% then the chances are a piece of software has crashed, most likely excel from what you're saying. Use the processes page of the task list to determine which process is using the CPU then end it, then determine the cause of the fault.

cpu utilisation hits 100% and than the fan starts running.
If CPU usage has gone over the top, then the chances are the CPU will heat up very quickly, so this is to be expected.

The problem is that the OS is not automactically starting the fan when needed?
The OS has no control whatsoever on the CPU fan, this is purely a hardware thing.

My feeling is that the reason you are getting this problem in XP and not Win98 is because Excel (or whatever) wasn't crashing before.

It's not just over heating, its freezing once it has reached a certain temp.
If the unit is totally hung, then this is an indication of the CPU overheating and is quite normal behabiour in the circumstances as the CPU halts to stop it from doing damage to itself. This is more likely to be down to a clogged fan or knacked bearings on the fan.

nb, I've seen many a CPU that has started locking up through over heating to later on down the road die completely, seems they can only put up with being in that condition for so long

Is it under warranty? One of our company Tosh's had a similar fault and required a new cooling module, however it was actually reporting a an error. Work was done under warranty.

I'm not sure its up to the operating system when to switch the fan on/off though....

Excel does not hang (nor anything else), when autosave prompts to save, cpu hits 100%, does it on every machine I have used, which is many. (Excel 2000)

Fan will also run when using ie and looking at streaming vid.

Machine is out of warranty, unfortunatly!

I had the same problem on my Fujitsu laptop. It turned out to be the CPU was just resting on the mother board. The clip that holds the CPU in place had come undone.

I spose I should take it a part and have a look! Not really looking forward to it, I replaced a FDD on a tosh sat pro ages ago. Had more tiny bolts / screws than I could shake a stick at. All different sizes, of course....
