XBox gurus - media file assignment from PC...
Hi,
I've got my XBox networked to the PC - I want to set it so that I've got a folder on my PC (with all my media stuff in) that the XBox media player can read....
How do I do it?
In "idiot" terms please - networking virgin here
Cheers,
Dan

Here's how mines setup . Set RelaX running as a service and forget about it
Another tutorial here.
You can use Samba shares and stuff too, but I prefer this.

You could just setup a "normal" windows file share and use "SMB" (the name for windows file sharing, called SAMBA in the linux world) but its not the best way.
Most people find its better to use a program called "Relax" on the server - which uses "XNS" for sharing files.
So you need:-
-Files you want to share
-Relax on that PC.
-Xbox Media Player (XBMP) on your Chipped XBox (or the newer XBMC).
-A working Network connection between the 2.
Rather than re-invent the wheel have a good look at the guides over at http://www.xbox-scene.com - Do lots of reading there - there are some excellent step-by-step guides there.
I happily Have all my CDs as MP3s and Lots of DVDs ripped to DivX files - With a typical 2Gb file for a 2Hr film I honestly cant tell the difference between that and the orig DVD for normal watching (as opposed to activley ignoring the film and instead studying the screen from a few inches waiting to pounce on the occasional artefact

OK I've done exactly what the tutorial has said -
changed my gateway to my PC's IP address, like so,
<gateway>192.168.0.2</gateway>
Got my ip from ipconfig btw.....
Then changed my Music attributes to the same -
<share>
<name>RELAX</name>
<url>d:\Media\Music@192.168.0.2</url>
</share>
Changed the Pictures one to the same deal -
<share>
<name>RELAX</name>
<url>d:\Media\Pictures@192.168.0.2</url>
</share>
And done the same with the Video
<share>
<name>RELAX</name>
<url>d:\Media\Videos@192.168.0.2</url>
</share>
I've got a folder on my D drive with the following address -
d:\Media
inside that I've got my 3 folders called
Pcitures
Music
Videos
I know that bit's worked because in XBMP, I can see the folders...
What have I done wrong?
I thought it might have been due to my setting the gateway as my XBox IP (192.168.0.3) - obviously, this was wrong.
HELP!!!!

Can you connect to the Relax App form its test mode ?
If you have a Personal Firewall you need to allow the Xbox to access port 1400/1401
My config.xml (for MP3s) is...
<share>
<name>MP3 on Apollo via Relax</name>
<url>E:\MP3@172.27.1.250:1401</url>
<cachesize>256</cachesize>

You need to download Relax (which is what serves the files
) (Link on this page)
When you unpack it there are 2 executables "relax.exe" and "relax-ns.exe".
Start with relax-ns.exe (ns= "non service") - its easier for testing. When its all working you can run "relax.exe" as a service - i.e. it runs tranpsarently in the background.

Even with a load of help last night (thx Simon btw
) I still haven't got it sorted
I've tried both SMB & Relax - it's not the tutorials or the help. It's me - there's something I', just not doing right, or at all.
I can see a RELAX/SMB folder in XBMP, but either can't access it, or there's nothing in it.
However, I'm getting Pipex next week, so I think I'm gonna put this on the backurner until I've got Broadband enabled. Then I'll add in a hub, add the XBox, and finally my Mac.
All one step at a time. I'm very new to networking (1st time was connecting the XBox to the PC), although I'm a user at work.
I think I need to get my head around IP, gateway subnet masks etc, before I delve to deeply, as I have proven - I've gone right up my own a$$!!!!
Has anybody got a good url for an idiot's guide to Networking?
Cheers,
Dan

I was initially using SMB shares within XBMP but I found that the performance could often drop off if you had a LOT of directories/sub-directories.
RelaX is deffo a better option I think. I have a RelaX share pointed at my i-Tunes music directory (so i-Tunes still manages the directory structure for Aritist/Album etc).
Its great being able to access your entire CD collection from the comfort of your armchair.

My point is if FTP is working. IP is working. so that's fine and not where your problems lies.
So either the Relax S/W isnt working (what version did you download ?) or its being blocked by some sort of personal firewall on your PC (ZoneAlarm, Norton, etc etc ?)

Hi Si, Dunk, as the man sed.....
Thought about the ADSL router, but I'm already getting a modem with Pipex....
Unless, my edumacation is all screwed (again!!!
), ADSL router has the modem built in. Correct?

So you can connect from PC to Xbox on FTP
XBMP is loading - reading config and creating folders.
Relax is loaded on the PC.
I'me sure you've checked it several times
but the PC ip address is correct in your config.xml ?
I seem to remember taking a few goes to the Relax config in the app working - this is a screen shot of my config.

Does the Relax TestClient.exe connect to Relax OK ?
