Norton and version that comes with Pipex
My ADSL connection to Pipex gave me a "free" copy of Norton Antivirus 2002 and a years worth of updates.
This runs out in 3 weeks.
It looks like Norton want 45 euros to upgrade to 2004, or £13 for another years subscription.
Is there anything to be gained by upgrading, or would be 45 euros be better spent elsewhere?
regards,
Greg

www.avast.com has been recommended as free and good for non-commerical home users, anyone know anything about it?

Don't do it!!!!!
I made the fatal mistake of upgrading to NAV/NIS 2004, rather than simply paying a fortune to subscribe to another years worth of LiveUpdates.
My original logic was that an upgrade would be only barely more expensive than renewing the subscription, but should provide a better product.
Unfortunately it didn't
My machine now regularly crashes and hangs. For a few months it tried to connect to the Internet at random intervals (until i found the reason deep on the support web-site).
When it crashed, log-files were cleared, and default sizes were reset
In the brand new product, certain "ad blocked" web-sites were actually set to "allow" - talk about product placement
So far i have downloaded (since October) well over 100MB of updates - bearing in mind that i am still on dial-up, this isn't too welcome.
Currently i cannot do LiveUpdates. The files download OK, but when they try to load it fails. As suggested by the support pages, i deleted temp files - it didn't work. I cleared out the download folder - it didn't work. I downloaded a multi-megabyte new version of LIVEUPDATE.EXE - it didn't work. I deleted a DLL to "fool" the new version of LIVEUPDATE to install - it didn't work. I am currently downloading yet another 3684.9KB of updates, and i will let you know how it goes.
However, i have beside me a full install version on McAffee Personal Firewall Plus 2004 and a copy of McAffee VirusScan2004, which will be installed this weekend, if Norton fails yet again. It was GBP39-99 from PC World for both.
Just under a meg to go...

Well **** ME!!!
The LiveUpdate didn't actually fail this time, and i am now bang up-to-date. However, it is a bit of a shame that it took them TWO FECKING MONTHS (and a few tens of megs of downloads) to fix the problem, thus potentially exposing me to MyDoom and the like
Oh, and there is a pigging "Restart Required" dialog box now being displayed, with ONLY an "OK" button available - so i have no choice but to reboot (can't leave it until later).
Aaaaarrrrgggghhhh!!!
