I think it's a forced upgrade as they changed the protocol to block 3rd party IM apps from using the MSN Messenger network.

Actually, I think forced upgrades might help Windows security as I'm sure some users have never heard of Windows Update.

Agreed that it is a PITA for those of us who know what we are doing.

I thought Trillian opened up some serious security holes, or have they patched all those now?

Guess Trillian may be one of the 3rd party IM programs the new protocols are designed to block?
