Lights flash on but nothing happens - new pc and first time I've tried to use it.

Go into MY COMPUTER & right click on the icon for your new drive. left click on EJECT and see if that works.

just a small amount of petrol just over the front of the pc, then stand well back and....

Would agree that the paperclip idea works. otherwise call the company you got it from and demand a replacement.

I had the same problem and I was told to un-install the driver then re-install it. It worked for me.
