Probably better using the drop shadow tool and set feather to 1. this would probably get the result you require. You could also do this with a mask.
Type the text then render it
Mask create from object,
mask / shape /expand /1 pixel, copy, paste as new object
fill new layer with paint
Does this make sense

Don't know about Corel but in PaintShop etc. you can place the text as a new layer turning it into a selection and then apply a drop shadow effect etc. to the selection.
Hope that makes sense.

No need to create an extra layer in Photoshop. Depending upon version, go Layeron the Menu Bar, Layer Style, Drop Shadow, or it sounds like you want Stroke, which puts an outline of your choice of colour, all the way round the Text.
Corel may or may not have something similar.
