Question

Doh!

Someone in the process (and it might be me ) has screwed up the order I placed through work for a pair of 250GB IDE hard drives to go into a pair of boxes for data storage.

They turn up yesterday and they are external drives running off firewire or USB 2.0. These are the puppies

Now, I really can't be arsed to try and find where the error occured (in case it was me) and don't want to have to send them back.

Now, has anyone had one of these open ? I'm considering pulling one open as I'm sure the actual drives are just going to be bogo standard units. Get the drive out and fit to machine number one, jobs a good 'un.

The second unit I'll keep as external as it'll be handy.

Anybody know ?

Cheers

Ian

Boggo standard ATA-100 or 133 5400rpm HD inside it. Or that's what my 50p is having read the spec sheet.

Cheers Chris,

That's how I read it as well. OK, I'll crack the case open, but the case looks like a one way jobbie. Either once you crack it, it'll never go back together again.

Cheers

Ian - If the case survives, I would be interested in taking it off of your hands

*ARRRKK* *ARRRKK* - the vultures are circling

OK, cases actually come apart without any screws and actually do snap back together again. Sorry guys but the case etc. is actually promised to a guy at work to use for backup purposes.

Anyway, I tried the disk I took out of the machine in the external enclosure but it doesn't spin up with that disk. Mind you, that disk was a 7200rpm disk, but makes you think that the Maxtors might have some special firmware to deal with being external ?

The disk I took out of the external casing to put in the server is actually a bogo standard 5400rpm Maxtor drive and is now fitted to the server which gives an additional 250GB of disk space

Cheers

Ian
