P133 Laptop - format and reinstall?
#1
Okay,
I've an old PI33 IBM thinkpad with Win 95 and lots of other dross. I'd like to format the hard drive and install Win 98 se from CD. Thinkpad has CD drive and external floppy, boots from floppy first, then CD. Anyone care to help with or point me to a step by step guide.
Thanks
Kevin.

Test things first (none destructively):
Grab a copy of the Windows 95b boot disk image and make a boot disk.
Put the Win95 CD in the drive and boot from the floppy you've just made.
When it's finished and you're at the DOS prompt, can you move on to the D: drive and read the CD-ROM that's in?

Cheers guys, how do I get into the BIOS in Win 95. Using the spacebar hold-down, I only seem to be able to get to a screen allows me to check the memory and hardware or to restart.
Chris, if you're still here that's Win95......
Thanks
Kevin.

You'll get into the BIOS before Windows 95 loads.
Do you see a flashing cursor in one corner of the screen? F10 was a common BIOS entry key on old IBMs.
If not you might see a message relating to "Press xx to enter system setup" or similar.

Usually you press the Del key to get into the BIOS when the PC is starting up.
Win 98 should have a boot disk along with it though which I always needed - cos when it booted it loaded the CD drivers so the CD-rom would work (of course if you reformat it usually will not), then it asks for the CD and does everything from there.

Okay, I'll try some of this tonight - what about formatting the hard drive. How do I do this, presumably before installing Win 98. Do I do this from the floppy somehow?

self explanatory on the Fdisk program.
Personally I'd
delete all active partitions
set / select size of new partition you want.
set it as active
format this partition..
go away and come back in half an hour
I think the command from the floppy
would be
"Fdisk" for the Fdisk program
or
"FORMAT C:/s"
that will just format drive C (without messing with partition settings) and add the system files to it so that it is bootable... forget the /s bit and I think it's ta ta drive C
