My girlfriend has Telewest Broadband and she needs to set up a rounter with another PC but she geting all sorts of advice and we just dont have a clue any more.
She as a cable broadband modem that plugs into her pc via a USB connection.
She does not what a set up that needs a pc as a host.
Been told she should get a network card and been told by others to get a USB modem but also been told by others there is no USB modem for sale.

I did this for my Dad and ex husband. Your fine with the usb connection for one of the pc's but you will need a network card for the 2nd.
You havent said was OS your running - with XP its as simple as clicking "share connection"....

Cerainly know what you mean about confusing.
I'm on cable broadband, same type of modem as you, somewhere on the back there will be a ethernet connection, put a network card in each computer, (if required, as some already have network connections and these should be fine), get a cable router (mines netgear, just buy a good one), connect them all up and each computer will be able to access the internet at the same time (I'm writing this while my daughter is chatting on MSN!) The router will also give you some firewall protection too!
Some other really clever people on here will be able to help you get it going if you get stuck.

If there are only 2 pc's you dont need a router... The box with the main feed becomes the proxy in effect and the other box will be sharing the main boxes net feed. Why add expense when its not necessary Ideally, they should both be running the same OS.
Connect the 2 pc's with a cross-cat5 cable. Voila

and also because, as stated, she doesn't want one PC to be the host, which results in one PC having to be on for the other(s) to access the net.
Go with Chris on this. Use proper networking (not that namby-pamby USB stuff) and do it right first time.
Assuming the cable modem already has an RJ45 ethernet port (most have) you need a router, three 'standard' (not crossover) CAT5 cables and LAN cards for each PC if they've not already got one (again, most newer PCs have one). Disconnect modem from USB, connect CAT5 cable from cable modem to WAN port on router, and from LAN ports on router to each PC. Take a look at this site it provides more info on settings etc., than you could ever wish for.
