Thumbs up

How about the awesome Fujitsu Lifebook P5000? Only available in the US, I think, but if you can get one over there and get it shipped over you're onto a winner.

$1899 (so a around £1200) buys you a Centrino laptop with a 900Mhz Pentium-M, 60Gb drive, 1280x768 screen, built-in DVD/CD-RW combo drive, 64Mb graphics card, wireless LAN, and loads of other bits. Whole thing weighs 3.4lbs (1.2Kg, or thereabouts) - so well under your weight target.

I've had a predecessor for one of these (see my page) for over 2 years now, and it's a superb machine, beautifully built. I stuck a 60Gb drive in mine, but other than that I'm still well-chuffed with it. Another good site for info about these chaps is www.leog.net.
