Laptop keyboard producing garbage

My mate's SOny Vaio has suddenly started to product garbage when he types.
If he plugs in an external keyboard everything is fine.
Anyone seen this before and is it cheap to repair - indeed can you fix it yourself ?

This happened to my IBM thinkpad. All that was needed, was to remove the keyboard, clean it (Pizza crumbs and God knows what else!) and then everything was fine.
I don't know how easy it is to remove the keyboards of the Viao though?
