Help, I really need to know how to make proper EPS files from jpegs, BMPs, GIFs etc, for output to cutters, plotters etc.

I've been using PSP for the last four years, but now I have to learn how to use CorelDraw very quickly and I'm totally lost

Any help much appreciated.

Dave.

short answer - you can't, easily

I have exactly the same problem (I have a business selling vinyl graphics etc.)

You can try using the trace program (I have it on my version 11 package, don't know if you will) or the other option is by hand. I find that unless the image is only 1 or 2 colours and VERY high res then the trace program is pointless though.

Best bet is to make the eps by hand. open the jpeg then change the view to outline. Draw a rectangle over the jpeg then change it to curves (this allows you to edit the nodes). Then edit & add nodes to get the basic outline before playing with the curves & lines between the nodes to get the exact shape required. This can take many hours though so you have to be very patient.

If you need any further advice i'll try and help where I can

Thanks a lot.

I knew it wouldn't be easy, and it's really just getting to know a new software program. Corel doesn't even call things the same, like Paintshop and Photoshop both have layers etc.

Just making sure I wasn't missing something blatantly obvious, and unfortunately....I'm not

Ah well, time to score out two weeks of playtime in the car I guess.

There's a program called Image Alchemy that can convert raster images to eps.

Don't know if it's any good for what you need but might be worth a look

Distinct difference - CorelDraw deals with Vector art, whereas Photoshop and PaintShop Pro deal with bitmapped art.

I don't bother with Corel for vector art - I use a great product called Xara X which is cheaper and better. You can get a free trial from www.xara.com

As for converting from bitmapped to vector - there's lots of programs that do it, but as someone mentioned, the results are not always spot-on.

Thanks everyone. I got Corel draw 9 full package, and Corel Trace is perfect for my needs. Maybe a little cleaning up of images, but essentially does what I require.
