how to upgrade from win 98se to xp pro when I only have a recovery disc

I have a laptop that came with xp pro already installed and my home computer is using win 98se which is getting a bit flakey.
What I was wondering is, is it possible to upgrade my home computer to xp pro using the back up disc I got with the laptop, whilest still retaining all the info that is already on my home computer. I have looked in the xp booklet and it does not show how to upgrade from earlier software.
