Lardy...got loads to go on m8.
Who installed the OS, where did you get the laptop ?
Has the memory been upgrade by anyone, what is the bios level.
Any extra drivers been installed.
Do you have anti-virus running in realtime, is there only one
anti-virus package installed, if any.
Did the problem occur after something was installed, downloaded ?
Any bios settings changed ?
possibly memory or IRQ related. too hard to say.

If you not already running IE 6 try and upgrade to it. I had this problem earlier in the year, IE was locking up, total non-response except the odd box drawing once a minute.

If you are running 6, then a bit of hacking needs to be done to the registry to get it re-installed.

Make sure you have all the XP patches installed and especially Service Pack 1. After that, if the problem persists, you can try changing some BIOS settings or look at the BIOS providers site for an update. Get some help with these things though - you can mess up big time if you make a mistake in this area...
We had a similar problem with PC's in work (not laptops) and a dodgy motherboard was the cause so the above may not help. Didn't PC world give you a warranty? Definitely ring and hassle them for a free fix before spending hours on the above.

Definitely a possibility. Makes sure no vents are covered when you use it, so best to put it on a flat surface.
