Buying a new PC
#1
I am thinking of buying a new PC. Not sure whether to have one built or get a ready made from PC World, Time etc.
If anyone has any recommended sites or advice it would be appreciated.

Just have to say it again..... "PC world" I would never buy a computer from them or Dixons etc (Same company) I have witnessed so many unhappy customers going mad trying to sort problems out."

I have just been quoted £935 for the following;
Athlon XP2400
100GB Hard Drive
512 MB DDR ram
64 mb Ge Force 2 Graphics
15" TFT
6 in 1 card reader
4xUSB
2XFirewire
56k Modem
3yr RTB warrenty (local firm so not a problem)
Keyboard & Mouse
Do you think this represents good value?

Yeah ... if you're ever thinking of buying anything from PC World just go in there any Saturday and watch the poor ******* in the "customer service" queue holding their broken computers and watching the helpless staff attempting to deal with problems they appear unqualified to deal with. I queued there once (returning a minor peripheral) and waited for ages while one of the two staff on duty waited on hold for someone on a manufacturer's helpdesk to answer his question ... doh!

If using it for any gaming, be very, very careful of the TFT screen, as only a very small percentage can display games properly, without getting all pastely-swirly on you when playing fast moving games. I would deffo say get a different vga card too.

I agree, we get all our work PC's from Dell. Good spec and good price. The only thing that would put ME off buying one for home would be the proprietry PSU, CASE, MOBO and fans.....
If you're not gonna upgrade it MOBO wise in the future then buy dell...

What kind of latitude do Dell's phone sales people have when you negotiate with them?
What is the technique?
I am looking at getting a laptop and the Inspiron 8200 2.4Ghz looks nice. (This is if work requirements and Wife don't permit me to get a delicious G4 Powerbook ...)
