Maximum volume size for Win96SE?

Question

I know, I know... I need to upgrade to something from the 21st century but I want to install a 120gb second HD on my PC at home. I'm trying to find out what the volume size limit is foe Win98SE. I've searched MS and it says something about 128gb, but I'm sure I've see a lower limit mentioned elsewhere, but can not find it now. I don't really want to create lots of virtual drives. Anyone know for definite what the limit is?

Just read somewhere else that FAT32 supports partitions up to 2 terrabytes. Can't confirm that the same can be said for Win98SE.

Either way you should have no probs with 120Gb.

What doe OEM mean and why do they state it?

Tis only £122 for Western Digital, Which are better performers arent they?

£118 actaully seen an offer now

OEM means Original Equipment Manufacturer and is used to mean it's just the bare drive, so no cables or manuals.

I'd be inclined to have two partitions, rather than one big one.

Are they? I don't have any experiance in which are the best. I'm prepared to go a little higher if it means a better drive.

Really? No manauls? WTF! How am I supposed to set it up then? I hope the manuals are available on-line...

Maxtor is UMDA133 and Wd is UMDA100. Am I likely to see much of a differance?

ones 100/mbs per sec other 1333 i think?

There both same Cache size 8mb which is good.

Try looking at reviews tbh. I just understood WD where the daddys

I just had some fun & games trying to install a 120GB drive under Windows 98. There are a few things to bear in mind:

- your PC's BIOS may need an update.

- the version of FDISK that ships with Win 98 has a bug in it that causes large drives to 'lose' 64GB. You can download a fixed version from M$, but although it works better, even this version has issues.

- I ended up partitioning the drive into two equal halves - no big deal, and it helps me to keep things organised.

Just to update.

I ordered a WD 120GB SE which arrived yesterday. While I was waiting for delivery I looked through the support pages on WD's website. They mentioned a potential problem when older BOIS' would not recognise drived larger than 64GB. Needless to say, this is what happened when I installed it in my PC. However, WD provide a tool that installs a sepreate BIOS that allows it to recognise the correct drive size. This was *very* easy to use and had my drive partitioned and formatted within about 5 mins

Very impressed with how easy it went.
