XP network issue

I have problems with networking between a 2000 machine and an XP machine. I can map manually using ip addresses etc but when trying to map to the XP machine it will just not do it by machine name. Now I know XP doesn't use NETBEUI but it must still be able to map by machine name somehow?
All my non XP machines on my network at home map fine by machine name. The reason I need to do this is because the ip addresses are assigned by DHCP so when they change any mapping I have done on the XP machine wont work. I am not running any servers, just the pro editions so I do not have any DNS or WINS setup and running.
What setting am I overlooking on XP?

Cheers for that Phil but have tried it and it still doesn't work Its really doing my head in now. I have tried to add it to the same work group as the 2k machine and it says it doesn't have permission to do that!
I have done a search on computer name in network neighbourhood and it doesn't find it. Yet mapping by ip address is still faultless. What the hell is going on. I also tried this on a mates 2k + xp network and it did exactly the same thing. I have to be overlooking a setting somewhere

OK now got it working, looks like somewhere along the line the xp firewall turned itself on although I made sure this was off when i installed it and mapping by ip address shouldnt have worked either!
Well who knows what the hell it was upto, but its working now

windows 2000 and XP can play silly buggers if the DNS settings are incorrect, it may be worth adding a hosts file to each pc with the name and ip address of all your machines. If you need any help drop me a mail. sjw75@btinternet.com

Si cheers m8 but I found out it was a couple of rules in my firewall (not the xp one) that were set incorrectly. Was to do with name resolution which is why I could connect via IP but not machine name. Had to change the settings and now it all works sweet
Bloody firewalls can be a right nightmare at times! Seems as though all the rules are sorted now, at least until I find something else doesn't work
