AM trying to buy some new memory for my old Dell server that runs Exchange.Currently have 2x128mb. Really need 512 minimum, or 1GB if the price is right. The Dell site reccomends Kingston Memeory for £120 for 256MB. Too much I think.
I also have received this back from Dell;
64- and 128-MB unbuffered DIMMs or 256-MB registered DIMMs; must
be rated for 100-MHz operation
What is the difference between unbuffered and registered?
If I get 133mhz rated memeory will this still work?
IS there a big difference between makes of memeory?
Where is the best place to get this?
Thanks,
Chris

Chris,

I bought two 512mb Kingston dimms for a Dell 2400 a couple of weeks ago and paid £146 + vat each. I went to Microwarehouse which are not always known for the best prices but are sometimes quite competitive. My contact there is Ross Stephens (020 8327 5952), he is an educational account manager but I am sure he could pass you on to a collegue, tell him Chris Roberts at Bromley college gave you his number. Or, I have also used Crucial memory (www.crucial.com) in dell servers, you can just select memory by entering your server type in the search fields.

Exclamation

Dells do *NOT* work with faster memory!

I have a Dell workstation running EEC registered PC100 RAM, I tried EEC registered PC133 memory in it and it did not boot (mixed or on it's own)

Don't try and save a few pounds going for alternatives, get PC100 memory!

I know you can get the same stuff for about £120 from Insight Beemerboy but I was in a hurry and Microwarehouse got it to me next day. Where the he11 did you get a Kingston 512Mb PC133 registered ECC dimm for £65 from?

Edited to say:

Ah yes Crucial at £65.99 - I believe I mentioned them.

Thanks guys, am off to cruical to buy 2x 256 unregistered, that way I'll either have 768MB or 512MB depending on the 2 sticks that are already in there. Wow what a difference, 256 unregistered for £39, 256 registerd for £104!!
