Please ignore my stupidity/ignorance about this matter.

I was lucky enough to be given this PC, someone else gave me a HP Deskjet 600 printer. Although the printer came with a power lead it did not come with a lead to connect into the back of the PC. The question is, are all leads the same or will I have to go to shop that supplies HP printers?? Also, what sort of price am I looking to pay for a lead.

You need a parallel cable.

Any printer to PC parallel lead should do.
