Guide to setting up active directory (win2k server)

Everything seems to run fine on the server - I can query active directory for users and computers and it lists everything it should, however the workstations (winxp) don't list anything at all, apart from the domain. Its as if they can't get at the info on the server.
Do the workstations have to be 'trusted' ?
Tried looking on Microsoft's site but the information is so splintered. Need one single good guide covering the successful setting up of active directory on the server and if needed, any info on setting it up on the workstations.
