In a DivX movie, the audio and video streams can be separately encoded. (and then spliced to one .AVI file) i.e. the audio track isn't necessarily DivX. Right-click on the file, and go to Properties. The Summary tab will tell you what codec the audio track was encoded with. It could be MP3, DivX, WAV, WMA etc...

i've had issues with media player before and opened the divx with the divxplayer (you get with the codec) which seems to then make the file playback fine..

The DivX player (that came with the codec) can't play the audio either.

If I check properties for the movie it just says it uses DivX codec. (no mention of audio)

Try playing it in VirtualDub.
I had a video once that played UPSIDE DOWN in all players, except in VirtualDub. (?)

Perfect picture quality - no sound at all.

Windows Media Player (v9) plays the movie but as it starts media player says error downloading codec. OS is WinXP

I went to www.divx.com and downloaded the latest version of DivX codec from there, but it didn't make any difference.

Any ideas anyone ?
