Question

BT have just upgraded the exchange in my area so I can now up grade to broadband.

Anyone got any info/comments on service providers they use? If I have BT enable my line then use another service provider does this mean I have to pay the £28 to BT for the line then another £20 odd to another service provider? sorry if thats a stupid question!

Any info on good/bad service providers welcome

No you don't have to pay both. Go for Demon @ £25. Had it about a month now, and no probs.
Unlike BT who say it could take anything upto 40 working days to install, Demon stated 15 days and did it on the 15th day.
Why are BT adevrtising so heavily when they obviously can't keep up with the demand.

Nildram, Eclipse or Zen seem to be rated at the moment.

Personally, I'd avoid the BT / BT Openworld ADSL service like the plague.

http://www.adslguide.org.uk/ - has loads of info on ISPs and you can compare user ratings

I signed up with Nildram recently, and was connected in a little over a week. £50 connection and £22.99 per month.

The speed is amazing (after a 56k modem). I've been getting downloads in the region of 480kb/s. I guess there's not many people using broardband in my area (yet).

Depends what you're after really as Plusnet offer a static IP, 250Mb of webspace and e-mail addresses of the form <anyone>@<username>.plus.com for a mere 23/24 quid a month. For an equivalent package from Nildram it's nearer 30. Very happy with the service from Plusnet and never had an outage in the 3 months I've been with them.

I was going to go with ZEN but didn't need the emails/web space and stuff, just plain internet access so I saved a few quid with Nildram.

We've got a VPN at work, so I can now work from home and have access to my work data and emails as if I was on the LAN.

That's a good point. It's a 12 month contract with Nildram.

Been on Nildram for a week now and very satisfied. All the people I spoke to there when opening my account were friendly and knowledgeable; installation was quoted as within 7 days, which they kept to.

Do a comparison on ADSLguide and they come out top for speed, reliability and service. I think their prices have come down a bit recently as well. Mine is Home 500, which is £30 p/m with 3 month min contract. Home 500 Lite is around £25, but 12 month min.

Tried calling Demon as I had my dial-up with them but just got some bird in a call centre who didn't seem to give a t*ss.

Also got wireless network from Wirelessnets www.wirelessnets.net, who are excellent.
