Question

Simple one for y'all . . . .

I want to get a broadband router to share my ADSL connection.
How does it all connect up ?
Does the ADSL modem connect into the router and has one IP address . . . humour me . . . then subsequently connected devices have their own IP unique addresses ?

My ADSL modem is a USB one, so how does that work ? Does the modem go into the first PC then that PC is connected to the router etc ?

Is that how it works ? My head hurts. How can I get multiple devices to share one broadband connection ?

Cheers,
Dunk

The Router has a built in modem and it allows you to use one ip address as the router acts as a dhcp server. You can scrap the USB modem as the router does it all for you. No disconnects, no slowdown and no more modem related crashes and best of all no dialups.

I use an Asus AAM6000EV, and its got the modem built in as above. It then plugs into a network hub, which also has the PCs connected. I then go to the IP address of the router, and it's got a nice little web site style set up bit. Then just configure the PCs to use it as a gateway, and bobs your mother's brother.

Dunk,

If you have BT Openworld, check the terms and conditions carefully - you may find that they don't allow it.

Having said that, Draytek produce a router which will allow you to plug a USB ADSL modem into it - see http://www.draytek.co.uk/products/vigor2200usb.html.

If you are not restricted, Draytek also produce a router with a built-in ADSL modem - http://www.draytek.co.uk/products/vigor2600.html.

No, I don't work for them - they have a very good reputation.

Thanks

Gavin

And there is a difference between what is prohibited (not allowed) and "not supported" (help desk wont give a f**k when you cant get it to work )

Thumbs up

Thanks guys. I have Freeserve Broadband and that crappy Alcatel modem. They only allow one connection, but when have T&C's ever stopped anyone before

The Vigor 2200USB Router seems to fit the bill perfectly. Thanks for your input

If your pc's are already on a network, you don't need any extra equipment to share your existing internet connection as you can use the windows built in internet connection sharing utility, however this works best with two network cards in the host machine which also must left switched on.

I used this configuration for a while and it works great, just did not like leaving host pc on all the time.

I've now got a Netgear DG814 and this works great straight out of the box and with built in NAT fireall, 4 port hub, DHCP server and ADSL modem with easy web based setup.

Ditto on the DG814, except it's a switch, not a hub.

I know, being pedantic
