If you want a cheap solution, D-Link have produced a new Ethernet ADSL modem:

http://www.dlink.co.uk/long_desc.asp?id=383

http://www.insight.com/uk/apps/produ..._id=DLKNA039NS

This gives maximum flexibility when you decide to buy a router and/or switch to cable or another type of broadband connection..

You need to have an ethernet network card in your PC or incorporated into the motherboard to use it.

Thanks

Gavin

Rik,

the USB modem will use your PC's system resources plus when you are online, your 1 PC will have a real IP address....you will be a sitting duck, even if you think you are covered with a software firewall like Zone alarm

Get a router running NAT (Network Address Translation) this way, the router has it's own PSU and it has the real IP address. your PC has a NIC which has a private IP address which the router then translates (ie that's why it's called NAT) and you are safer (not completely safe though )

hope that made sense!
Jon
