WinXP - maximum inbound connections reached
#2
I'm not sharing any files at all.
I'm only running ColdFusion MX Server, Office and Windows Messenger and Outlook Express / IE
We have the same problem on a Win2k computer upstairs - too many inbound connections, but thats only running office, pegasus opera2, windows messenger and outlook express/IE
I altered the timeout value to 5 mins, but tomorrow I'll take your advice and alter the timeout to something much smaller. Will this have any dire consequences ?
Dunno if this helps but both PC's are running TCP, with DHCP from the main Win2k server. DNS is via the DHCP server too. There's a SonicWall firewalling, and an ADSL router connecting the LAN to the Internet.

This problem manifests itself by not letting me browse the network. The computer tells me the maximum number of (inbound) connections has been reached.
This was never a problem on Win9x, only now on Win2k and XP.
I've read MS Knowledgebase which tells me there's a limit of 10 simultaneous inbound connections to a machine, which each timeout after a default of 15minutes.
My question is, why have I got so many inbound connections to my machine ?
My machine is a WinXP box, joined to the domain and has no printers connected to it.

start run -> mmc

press add
select computer management -> press add ->
local computer -> press finish
press close
press ok
expand compuater mangement (local)
go to system tools -> share folders -> sessions
That should show you.
PS>could also try open files

Change the timeout value to something alot smaller, say 300secs..
Shouldnt be that many things inbound on a client machine anyway - unless your running server apps of it (like WWW server or SMTP server)..

You said in one of your other threads that you hadn't got AD working and (I assume) that Dynamic DNS isn't either. Do you still have a WINS server 'cos it sounds like your XP box is possible trying to be the master browser....

Jeff, when you say dynamic dns... we have dns running on the win2k server.
The same server runs DHCP, which issues clients with their IP and DNS information.
Don't have a WINS server - I remember you mentioning it was something that wasn't important. I haven't bother installing one since. I'll go and have a read up on WINS and what it offers.
When you say my XP box could be trying to be the "master server" do you mean WINS ? If so, do I just install WINS on the main Win2k server ?
