Question

Hi All

I have a domain, with 1 server(2k). Everything works hunky dorry, but I now have built a second machine as an additional domain controller.

Now following the wizard through it looks for the current domain which is enspireit.com however all I get is this

"the specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted."

Now the domain does exist, as we use it all the time and this new server is logged in.

So, what the hell is happening - do I need to do something to the domain controller first b4 trying to make an addtional ????

any ideas all appreciated.

Andy

Does the DNS on the new server have the existing server as it's first entry?

Assuming your existing DC has DNS installed make sure the new Server is using it as its primary DNS server.

Also make sure that the zone is capible of dynamic updates.

Before running DCPROMO make sure both machines can ping each other via name, both NetBios format (ie SERVER1) and FQN (ie SERVER1.yourdomain.com)

Should be that. Usually the Eventlogs will tell you why.

My DNS is all being done by a smoothwall firewall/router linux box. Pretty sure DNS isnt being handled at all by the DC

Are you using AD? If so, DNS must be installed on your existing DC.
