Get yourself to Maplins or similar and buy yourself a null modem cable (long lead with a male parallel port on each end). Connect the machines to each other. Go to Start>Programs>Accessories>Communications >Network & dial-up connections> Double-click on 'Make a new connection'. Thi'll start a wizard so just follow the steps.

I've had varying degrees of success with this (Win '98 - tore my hair out, XP was better) so no promises. If you do have a complete sense of humour failure, you might just end up buying Laplink, PC Anywhere or similar.

Best of luck.

Cheers

Have both machines got network card/ports in them? If so, just buy yourself a crossover cable (about £7 from PC world, so cheaper anywhere else) and connect 'em up. Set the IP address of one PC's network card to 192.168.0.1, and the other PC's IP to 192.168.0.1 - and bob's your Aunty's live-in lover, they'll be connected.

A perfect example of why developers shouldn't be allowed near anything technical

Try 192.168.0.1 and something different - like 192.168.0.2

Of course it would have been "the Network's fault" that the application didnt work

Cool

Bugger. Cut & paste error (the developer's most powerful tool for propogating errors throughout a system).

But you're right - "that's a hardware problem"

DHCP - It will automaticaly allocate an IP address.

Right click netowrk properties, go to TCP/IP settings and u can set the IP address from here.

Not without a DHCP server...

If you're using Win2K, enable internet connection sharing and that machine will be set to be 192.168.0.1 automatically, and anything plugged into the same network will be assigned 192.168.0.X... (it forces the machine with ICS to act as a DHCP server too)

My mistake. I was thinking of a router set-up, this is what I have set-up.
