I have been on NTL Broadband for a few monhs now and I used to be seriously impressed with the speed. Over the last 2 weeks something has happened which has affected the speed at which I can browse using a web browser. This has not affected my download files speed or ping on Counterstrike.

I use this site to measure my thoughput http://homepage.tinet.ie/~leslie/testpage.htm
click on the 56k/ISDN one and tell me what cps you get. I used to get 70000 cps throughput and now I am lucky to get 8000 cps. Has anyone on NTL Broadband in the South experienced this ? I have written to them but got no where. They say they don't measure throughput only download speed and as this has been unaffected they say there is nothing wrong but there is!!! I can't even listen to radio via a web site now becos it keeps buffering where as before it used to be clear.

Many thanks for anyones help in this matter

Your counterstrike ping wont really be affected by bandwidth problems as its based on hop times between source and destination IP's. Hence why on a 64k NTL setup you will get the same CS ping as on 512k or 1mb NTL because your going over the same NTL backbone. However you may notice problems with packet loss and choke which will affect your gameplay more than an increased ping.

Such download meter URL's arent really an accurate test of BW due to the many variables that can affect your final download speed. The only thing I can think of, if your download speed isnt affected, is that your having problems resolving DNS or using cached information via NTL's invisible cache's. You can override these by changing the connection setting under IE. Cant remember any names of the other Inkotomi caches (there are 1/2 for each cable region) off the top of my head and Im at work so cant check home pc.

Simon.

I've got NTL Broadband too, and I had this problem a while ago.

Browsing the internet just ground to a halt.

Have you done the usual things like resetting the cable modem?

If you have, then you need to give the tech support guys a ring, there might be a faulty router somewhere down the line.

If this doesn't help, then give me a shout and I'll try to help further.

I've just signed up for the 600k service, didn't think about it just called then and it's done. Should be a bit faster than my current 28.8 but will I hit any snags. Someone tell me I've done the right thing.

Note that there have recently (in the last week) been big problems in America with virus attacks which have ground sections of the internet to a complete halt at times, (I know because I was trying to connect to machines in our usa office). So this may be part of your problem.....

DuggE4 your problem is probably the NTL proxy server have a look at www.nthellworld.com for more info.
I use "inktomi1-man.server.ntl.com" proxy server and it is alot faster than my local NTL server.
To change the proxy server goto Control Panel>Internet options>Connections>Lan settings, then tick the box "Use a proxy for your lan" and enter a Proxy server address like "inktomi1-man.server.ntl.com" but with out the "" and you should find your serfing alot quicker.

What do I have then?

Only pay £15 a month, does that mean I have the 128k speed?

Have tested speed as you suggest but what figures should I be getting and should I use a Booster?

I have Tweakmaster should that do?

I know it's question, question, question, but is that not how we learn.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Thats what I've got then. Seems to do me fine and just as fast as my mates 500k ntl.

He does download a lot of movies which I don't, but what would my benefits be if I went any faster?

Jack - lovely photoshoped MY03, you tempted?

Tempted, oh yes. But won't be getting a new one for a bit yet. Kitchen, Bathroom and heating system are winning hands down at the mo.

Back on topic'ish. I'm going from a 28.8 modem up to an advertised 600k, what I expect is everything I have now 20x faster. Not sure if I'll be able to keep up.

Does anyone know how much storage NTL give? I'd look it up, but at 28.8 I could be on here a while

Thanks to everyone who responded with suggestions etc....I have just checked it again now and I'm now getting massive throughput once again!! Obviously my whinge to NTL has caused them to look at something internal to them and it has been rectified. I just wish the buggers wouldn't be so elusive about it and just tell the truth!! I'd rather know something was affecting performance than leave it to guesswork and theory!!

Still can't complain, I still have nightmares about BT!!! :OD

I had this problem, turns out that someone at NTL decided that I should be on their copper connection meaning that my DL rate remained the same but my upload rate was reduced to 56K

Call NTL and get them to check your connection and ask them what tariff they have you connected at.

Dug, what exact package are you running.

Tried your test and got 25000cps where it also tells me is more than average for my 128k connection.

I changed my proxy server and run Tweak Master.

Really looking to maximize Kazaalite/Direct Connect performance.
