Quick question for the assembled brains on Scoobynet

Do twin CPU motherboards give you resilience as well as performance e.g. if one CPU breaks (overheats/just fatally fails) does the whole machine continue to run, or does it fall over in a big heap.

If it does carry on, how does it do it e.g what happens to the in-flight instructions that were in (or cached in) the processor immediately before it stopped? Surely there are/were important to some process or other and can't really be ignored

Edit: 666 posts. Eek

Question

I think it would stop.... unless it was a machine specifically designed to provide FT / redundancy... which probably doesn't exist anyway...

normally they fall over in a rather large heap but you could have one that would carry on if one fails if you wanted to design one, i imagine that the likes of the cray super computers dont fall over if a cpu fails could be wrong tho. im just glad non of the cpu's have failed in my servers yet

they normally crash if a cpu fails, if running nt you would then either do a few things...

1) On a compaq server run hal recovery mode..
2) Edit Boot.Ini and add /Onecpu
3) Replace the HAL

Oh and Prey!
