Have you tried holding the power button down for > 2 seconds?

Normally restarts them. If not, there might be a tiny reset button somewhere.

ok... can you turn off your laptop and reboot? (make sure your laptop is rebooted and not waking up from suspend or hibernation)if yes, does it go into the blue screen and do it's memory dump?

if you had open files and they are not saved, you will loose it when your laptop goes into the memory dump (also notoriously known as BSoD - blue screen of death!).

have you install the proper drivers for your cd writer and network card? once you transfer you data, i suggest you do a fresh install of the OS. it's a bit of a pain but that's the best way to get rid of any gremlins in the OS, etc.
