mek sure that a good IRQ and i/o range is assigned to each port :-
i.e. com1 = irq4 and io 3f8 to 3ff
com2 = irq3 and 2f8 to 02ff
you may have to turn off the automatic settings option to do this.

I installed Nokia data suite and it knacked the comms ports. My mates a genius and he did ctrl-alt-del, took one look at the list of running programs and said MPIAPI3 was the problem. Stopped that and the comms ports worked again. Oh and nokia still worked too. Same thing happened to a colleague. Thats on Win 98 though.
