Puff,
You can even get a decent top name machine for around £850. Take a look at the Dell deals at the moment. I managed to spec a 1.8GHz machine with a 15" LCD for around £880 delivered and incl VAT. Of course, you need to spend a bit more to get a wireless card/adaptor, or use a USB wireless widget.
For example, see: Dell (S2) Dimension 4500s 1.8GHz
Change the 3 years on site support down to 1 year collect & return, change monitor to the 15" LCD and you are below budget. Add a DVD drive pushes you slightly over, but might be worth it ?
Then buy a USB wireless LAN adaptor for about £50 - 60 job done and you'll have a known name system.
Cheers
Ian

I'm inclined to say that because of the profile of the major liquidations, stuff tends to go for stupid money, e.g. at Enron, 15" TFTs were being knocked down for £250-£350 *before* 10% buyer's premium and VAT, but it's still worth keeping an eye on these events, especially (IMHO) as there are going to be lots more companies dissolving over the next couple of years.
Edited to add... most of the companies I've sold to during my (laughable) IT sales career are now in trouble!

Anyone do a good new price for the lowest spec Evo & an [anybrand] TFT/LCD screen? Also a wireless LAN card for the above?
For my IT illiterate nephew who must have one at school, so concept of a known brand PC with not too many bells/whistles as they're lost on him & a flat screen for desk-space. W98/2K or XP, whatever.
Evo also nice 'cos of small form factor.
Anything else, bearing in mind peramiters?
Not asking anyone to really bend over backwards for the mega-best deal, but should get within an £850 budget (inc VAT) I reckon.

TCR, first turning on right
and you will see the Computer fair. Guy selling them is a Black guy and has been dealing for years . I've had stuff and had no problems.
I'm sure Ive got the details correct..... But more memory etc is very cheap there. Its a £ to get in!!

puff, for that kindof budget, maybe you can get a notebook? if not, have a look at www.gemma.co.uk for the super mini PC (shuttle XPC). it's about the size of a shoe box!
