Unhappy

Anyone know how I can get onto scoobynet at work - my MIS dept has kindly barred the site :-(

I read something a while ago about a site which would open websites in a new window without leaving a trace of evidence (hee hee!), but I can't remember what it was called.

Thanks

Dibs

It seems too obvious, but you could try:

too see how diligent they are.

Assuming you're the only Scoobynetter at work, I'd take it as a sign they know you've been surfing too much.

Check this piece of web proxy avoidance software called JAP, which handily unlocks Scoobynet (and other restricted websites).

(Caveat: the website appears to be down at the moment, hopefully it's just me. Although there's plenty listed at Google's Directory on the subject.)

Bear in mind that if your company has explicitly barred Scoobynet, it implies that they have a fairly strict web-usage policy. If it's anything like our company, this will also mean that employing proxy-avoidance software is a dismissable offence.

Check your web-usage guidelines, and be very confident that you know what you're doing. Scoobynet's hardly worth losing your job over!

You could always do what I do - I have my personal laptop on the desk next to me, and use dial-up to access the web. This has several advantages:

1. My personal email never goes near the work network, so I can send/recieve what I like.

2. Because it's a personal dial-up, I have no restrictions on what sites I surf.

3. By tying up the phone line all day, those pesky users can't get through to me, so don't bother me with dumb support questions.

MarkO,

So the company don't mind you using a dialup all day ? Do they pay for the call

Nope. In fact, up until a few months ago, the company's internet connection was so sh*t that they frequently asked me to download/send stuff for them using my laptop. So in effect it's 'officially sanctioned'.
Do they pay for the call
They used to, for about the first 8 months I did it. But me and a couple of other guys who were doing it started to run up £200+ bills per month, and management got a bit shirty. Luckily that was around the time the unmetered 0800 dialups were becoming available, so for the last 2 years or so I've used a BT Anytime account registered to my company. £15.99/month, and I stay dialled-up from 7am until I go home at 5pm.

Fair enough.

Actually, I've got the best of both worlds now - since March we've had a proper link installed, giving us decent web access. This means that I can surf the 'dodgier' sites and use email with impunity on the laptop, but if I need to download anything large I can pull it down on the corporate link at 230kb/sec and copy it across to my machine via the LAN.

What the frig are you gonna do with a 34 MBit connection ? what do you need all that bandwith for. Its almost DS3 backbone circuit speed. I thought I hsd it good with a dedicated 2 MBit net connection to my desktop at work (mine, all mine )

Cool

Cheers peeps
Using the IP address works fine. I'll just have to make sure that I cut down on excessive usage, so it's lunchtimes only from now on!!!!

If your Firewall Admin has blocked the site and your the only one using it I'm sure that they will be looking long and hard at anything that comes from your machine/log-on.....
