Quality is nowhere near as good.

A standard VCD is 70mins long, 25 frames per second, and only half the resolution of a TV screen.
You could go for the SVCD option, then you can only get 35mins on a CD.

It's watchable, but you have to swap half way through, and you'll need a number of apps to do it.

Get a DVD ripper (anyone will do).
Get a copy of TMPGEnc (via the vcdhelp.com site), which will let you convert the original file into 65min MPG files. (make sure they are MPG otherwise Nero will take ages to do the conversion from AVI).
Burn each of the 65min files to VCD via Nero.

I did this with with a jerremy clarkson dvd. the dvd was only about a hour long, it took about 8-9 hrs to do it and required about 4 different apps, from memory , one to rip the vid, one to rip the audio, one to merge them together etc...

the end result was quite good, not as good as the original but not far off.

I found a site devoted to this subject with the apps avilable for download, if i can find it again i'll post the url.

If you just want to watch the film on your PC then divx is much better. Most films will fit on 1 cd too

I used the guide at http://www.vcdhelp.com/dvdtovcd.htm - very detailed and worked ok for me. I skipped the x-tractor stuff for creating chapters preferring to setup my own chapters using VCDEasy.
