Just reinstalling W98 on my Dads laptop and the thought occured. WTF is the point? If I where going to copy the software and give it to a mate, I would give the key to.

Ages back my mate lost the key to his W98 disc and my key worked

So whats the point?

PS - Mods - this is not a how to nick copyright software thread - just why do they have a key ?

 

So MS can track who's using who's product keys - both try to apply for an upgrade in future and see what happens...
